To give you an idea on pricing and what it costs to feed one, as of January 2013, our mares are eating Southern States Mare and Foal/Grow and Perform feed, at approx a bag and a half a week... which is roughly $15/bag. That right there is $22.50 per week for each mare. They eat alfalfa hay, which typically will divide out through into $7/bale, with each mare going through approx 2 bales a week. So were at $22.50 and $14 per week per mare which is $36.50 each mare. So, just add in the time we put them up before foaling, 3 months prior, (12 weeks) and x 36.50/wk is $438 for 3 months. Now multiply that times 6 more months, which is how long they stay with a foal at their side, and you have $2628. Then add in say, 4 visits from the farrier to trim, at approx $30 x4 = $120, and 3 sets of shots, at 50 x 3 = $150, 6 wormings at $12 x 6= $72, and you now have 

$438 for the 1st 3 months until they foal
$2628 the 6 months after they foal that they have the foal at side
$120 for farrier 
$150 shots/vaccinations for the mare
$72 wormer

$3408 in the mare's nutrition, care and upkeep during the pregnancy. That does not include any vet care should something go wrong. This doesnt mean we want every cent of that when pricing a foal. On the contrary. Our goal is to produce the best we can, with the qualities and traits we plan for. We cant keep them all, so if you have any interest in any, just let us know! 

But... when you start shopping for a foal, take into consideration the nutrition the mare has had the entire pregnancy, as it makes a significant difference in the quality and growth of the foal. Next time you see someone offering a baby for less than a thousand, and keep in mind this above is not even including any vet or any stud fee... just keep that in mind when you are shopping, as several breeders just toss the mares out and let them fend for themselves during their pregnancy, which cuts cost corners but also the quality and sometimes health of the foal for later on. Babies under a thousand usually havent had the care throughout the pregnancy that most mares need to produce a healthy, vibrant foal. 

Yes they are not inexpensive, but we raise our horses with all intent and acceptance to hold onto ourselves... not to turn over as babies and keep moving more in and out. We breed to produce top quality AQHA and APHA horses that have the mind to be easily accepting and trainable, the movement to be able to show if the owner chooses to do so - or just be smooth and correct for comfort on the trail - and the color to turn heads no matter where you go.
